A Sovereign God

Lesson 6: God Is Sovereign — Ruling, Reigning, Right Now

Not Passive. Not Distant. Not Silent.

God doesn’t sit back and watch.
He rules.
He acts.
He ordains.

“Our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.” — Psalm 115:3

He’s Not Hoping. He’s Decreeing.

God is not waiting for permission.
He is not reacting to the world.
He directs it.

“He works all things according to the counsel of His will.” — Ephesians 1:11

Modern Christianity Says Otherwise

Many believe God is “doing His best.”
That He’s watching from afar.
That He’s surprised by sin, chaos, or tragedy.

That is not the God of the Bible.

The Church Is Shrinking God

  • “God lets us run the show.”

  • “God wouldn't interfere.”

  • “God just wants you to be happy.”

No.
God wants you to be holy.
And He runs the show.

He Raises Kings and Destroys Empires

“He changes times and seasons;
He removes kings and sets up kings.” — Daniel 2:21

Not a leaf falls apart from His will.
Not a ruler sits apart from His purpose.

His Sovereignty Is Not a Threat — It’s Comfort

If God isn’t in control,
then who is?

The devil?
Governments?
Us?

Perish the thought.

He Is Active in the World

He didn’t just wind the clock.

He speaks.
He moves.
He sustains.

“In Him we live and move and have our being.” — Acts 17:28
“He upholds the universe by the word of His power.” — Hebrews 1:3

Providence, Not Coincidence

That door that opened?
That trial that shaped you?
That person who shared Christ with you?

God did that.

Even Suffering Is Under His Hand

Not one tear wasted.
Not one hardship random.

“All things work together for good…” — Romans 8:28

Even the worst things
bow to the will of a good God.

Jesus’ Death Was Sovereignly Planned

“This Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God…” — Acts 2:23

The cross wasn’t Plan B.
It was the plan.

The Danger of Denying This

If God isn’t sovereign:

  • Prayer is powerless.

  • Suffering is senseless.

  • Hope is empty.

  • Salvation isn’t secure.

The Church Must Recover This Doctrine

We don’t need a smaller God.
We need the biblical God.

Big.
Holy.
Wise.
Ruling over every atom.

Sovereign in Salvation Too

“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy.” — Romans 9:15

God chooses.
God draws.
God saves.

And He gets all the glory.

He’s Not Just Involved — He’s In Charge

Everything that happens,
happens through Him, by Him, and for Him.

“For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things.” — Romans 11:36

Summary

  • God doesn’t react — He reigns.

  • He governs galaxies and guides your steps.

  • His sovereignty isn’t cold — it’s comforting.

  • The church must stop shrinking God to fit culture.

  • He is not tame. He is not small. He is King.
